A recent lawsuit claims Purina’s popular Beneful brand is hurting and killing pets.

More than 3,000 online complaints have been filed by dog-owners claiming Purina Petcare Beneful’s dry “kibble” variety is killing and hurting dogs, according to the class action lawsuit filed Feb. 5 in federal court.

The brand is still on store shelves in the Tri-State area (Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana) and has not been recalled.

This class action suit concerns “kibble” dry food, which includes “Purina Beneful Health Weight”; “Purina Beneful Original”; “Purina Beneful Incredibites,” and “Purina Beneful Healthy Growth for Puppies”, “Purina Beneful Healthy Smile”, “Purina Beneful Health Fiesta”, “Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance”, and “Purina Beneful Playful Life” varieties.

Pff. Who needs pet food that is able to kill your dog, if u can just make your own! Make sth for your pet that it can eat, and voilà, healthy pet food!

Maybe it's because they give the food too much. Take a break with the food and give it something else

I had a Dachshund that only eat benefull and he lived to be 16 years old and he was one of the most buff dachshunds I have ever seen. I have a new dog now because my dachshund passed away from old age but my new dog started throwing up once we gave her the benefull. I have since switched to blue buffalo chicken and brown rice and no problems. I suggest to any one having a similar problem look up the dog food ratings and find one that is in your price range or you can find recipes to make your own dog food. it's easier than it sounds. good luck 🙂

It's melanin and it's legal for them to import wheat from China and still call it an American made product with American ingredients. The cure is Coca-cola.You get a bad pain in your side you have to drink a few 2 liters to flush out the kidney. They poison U.S. food the same way. We're all dying here and the Dr's just claim we have auto-immune disorders when it's the MELANIN.

Before I got a dog, I did my research. I prepped myself. Therefore, for you to not know purina sucks, I honestly don't care. Yea, it's sad your dog passed but in a sense, as a responsible owner, you failed. Sorry, but health is key in my book.

Purina Beneful is junk food, if it doesn't kill your dog now it will do harm later. It's the same for most of the cheap supermarket brand pet food and after learning about what ingredient goes into making high grade pet food I would never go back.

Weird. Because my dog has eaten Beneful Original all his life, and never has he shown any signs of "poisoning". He's a Lab/Rott mix. He is 13 now, and is still going. The main issue is him being unable to walk/run as good as he once could, which started just last year. We noticed him whimpering while lying down last month. He started dragging his left rear leg, avoiding use altogether by using only his front legs to get up and move. We immediately took him to the vet, and the vet diagnosed that it is likely an age related issue like Arthritis. This is because his appetite was completely fine. He was given some meds to investigate on this diagnosis further, and so far so good. He's being his spoiled, grumpy old self again. Chasing the squirrels and cats out of his yard.

Note that people say it is when they SWITCH to feeding their dogs Beneful that their dogs experience signs of illness. Hopefully these people are not just jumping from one brand of dog food to the next. You have to gradually change their food over time… Changing too quickly upsets your dog's stomach. You will see your dog(s) experiencing stress, lethargy, diarrhea, and vomiting (especially you switch from Dry to Wet). You also have to take the dog's breed, and size into account when it comes to their diet.

As much as it still hurts to admit it to myself and others I fed the dogfood in 2007 that killed my dog.The guilt still eats at me.Thats why I quit feeding comercial man made crap kibble. My current dogs have been on raw diet since they were weaned.

My dog was having seizures from eating Purina Beneful. For a long time I couldn't figure out what was going on with her. Once I was told not to feed her Beneful.. her seizures stopped. She hasn't had a seizure for a long time now.. but it makes me wonder if it did any damage. I am outraged with their excuses and denial!!!!!!

The majority of pet foods sold are not safe due to the FDA not allowing our Food Safety Laws to apply to any animal. The FDA policy page titled “Diversion of Unfit Foods for Animal Use” (google that) says our food safety laws “…have been interpreted to allow different standards for food intended for human use and food intended for animal use.” A sample list of what is allowed for animals is also provided to clarify what this different animal standard really means.  This Animal Grade Feed Standard is described here as allowing contamination by “over tolerance or unpermitted drug residue”,  “non-food pesticide”, “food-grade pesticide”,  “industrial chemicals” and “Microbiological Contamination.” Even most of the pricier foods that claim to be ‘ALL NATURAL’ or ‘MADE IN AMERICA’ will often still contain unsafe levels of chemical preservatives. These unhealthy levels of BHT, BHA & ethoxyquin are necessary for the animal-grade rendering process because animal feed grade materials are often in a degraded state before being processed and because they give the materials a very long shelf life. These heavy amounts of preservatives are the main cause of food allergies, which manifests as excessive licking of the paws in dogs.  These safer-seeming foods that don’t have the human grade standard can also contain mystery meats, such as euthanized pets, a source of contamination of euthanizing drugs and heavy metals because pets are often heaped into the grinders with their collars and tags still on before being pumped into rendering vats for animal grade feed. Lets keep the pressure on the FDA/CVM to allow the "Human Grade" label for pet food.  Its the only way to change a century-long problem of the Animal Feed industry self regulating itself through a private company, AAFCO, and pushing intentionally poisoned material on regular people.  Owning a pet doesn't mean you are purveyor of industrial livestock or industrial feed so you should not be subjected to these industry controlled standards that lack the protection of our basic food safety laws.  Sharon Benz, the director of the FDA/CVM says that animals are protected by our food safety laws so just lies as if people can't read FDA policy.  They will never change.  We can only push them to allow the 'Human Grade" label so people can know what is safe.  Some of the foods that use the Human Grade Standard are: FROMM, HONEST KITCHEN, PETCUREAN, BREEDER’S CHOICE, PINNACLE, VITAL ESSENTIALS, STELLA & CHEWY’S, TIKI CAT, FUSSIE CAT, AVODERM, DOGSWELL, BRAVO, WILD CALLING and EVANGERS.  You are responsible for your pets safety.  Home cook or buy pet food made with human grade ingredients.

Just the idea that's its a class action lawsuit proves it's going to be tossed out. They have no proof at all. You need a vet to back you up. Our local vet was interviewed about this and said that he doesn't sell that brand at his practice but those ingredients wouldn't kill a dog.  Here are some facts. Purina has had the least amount of pet food recalls of any pet food on the market. Even the higher quality brands have had recalls.
