Another question: my and I have a boxer that's turning 6months old. We're contemplating on adopting an Irish Red white setter who became fearful of strangers for some reason. My bf and I want him, but he is worried that the dog's fear of strangers would wear off on our puppy who loves meeting new people? She is already well socialized, so I am not worried. But what do you think? I told him that we could work with them separately. Leia could continue getting good experience with strangers, and we could work with getting him comfortable separate from her.

I'm curious. What do you think of Cesar Millan's approach to dog training?

I love that you are compassionate and you do not train with punishment.

If a dog is doing unwanted behavior and you get him to stop, do you reward him because he stopped? Or are you teaching him that if he does the unwanted behavior that he gets a reward?

I’m curious about your suggestion to “control their environment” and to make sure they are not in a position to damage property. What exactly does that mean? My pup is always trying to chew the corners of our coffee table. I can’t just keep her out of the living room or remove the coffee table. Also when trying to distract her from the bad things she’s doing, she acknowledges my call or clap and then goes right back to what she was doing. These solutions can’t just be so black and white, right?

So my fiance, roommate and I are trying to house train our 9 month old corgi+husky puppy. Today in particular, I took her out of a morning run, we did a mile + intermittently walking/running. She has been on multiple walks today. Roommate took her out to play for an hour + and she was pretty good for the rest of the day. She was sleeping and didn't really want to do much. Fast forward to this night. I'm trying to train her to be off the couch. She seems to have some energy so my fiance and I start playing keepaway. She loves this game but starts getting bitey and aggressively biting us. We start getting frustrated and tell her to sit. She runs to the couch and peed on it… how is it possible to have this much energy. She's in her crate for a time out. I know there is a better way to teach her but she keeps insisting on getting on the couch. We dont want her getting on until she is house trained for the above reason. Something tells me she did that put of frustration….

You discuss exercise, which is extremely important, but what about people with physical limitations? How can I exercise my dogs without being able to run? Thank you! If it helps, our home is on 3 secluded acres but not fenced in. One is a 3 year old bully who is pretty calm at her age as I have trained her to be calm. The other is a 6 month old very high energy Doberman. Both will wander outside of their boundaries with supervision; which has resulted in our 3 yr old dog being attacked by a neighboring dog who is other animal aggressive to all species other than the owners own dogs. Also her recall is horrible. I've tried and have had professional training for her, but not our puppy yet. So in other words, I am struggling immensely! Any help is appreciated!

It's interesting that when we say our dog is behaving 'badly' that often times, it is us that have inadvertently reinforced the undesirable behaviour. Every second that we are spending time with our dogs, we are training them without even realizing it. Being proactive and rewarding our dogs when they are performing desirable behaviours (offering a sit, being calm, sitting on their mat) as well as diverting those undesirable ones into desirable ones, and rewarding for this, is essential. Positive reinforcement helps our dogs to learn by association in a fun and humane way.

I heard that you can punish your dog by hitting them lightly with the paper roll thing in the nose is it wrong because I don’t want to hit my dog but she won’t stop eating everything in the house she is 7 monthes

Hi Zak, my dog has become quite aggressive with other dogs especially with puppies. It is a behaviour that's really outside of his character and we have no idea how to curb it. Any advice on what we need to in order for him to stop? Or please make a video! Thanks.

Seems worth mentioning that dogs have a need to chew. Make sure there are chew toys available, otherwise chewing the couch will be more attractive than getting a treat.

    Zak please help me.
I adopted a 11 month old german wired haired x short haired pointer he was neglected for his whole 11 months not trained not socialized it was a very sad case. I felt i was up to the challange to make him a well behaved dog. I have some experiance working with attack dogs and high driven dogs and own a female doberman whos is trained amazingly by me.
All he wants is love and attention but he dosnt know anything took me a long time just to teach him his name and to sit when i walk out there. He is not toy driven and dosnt seem to be driven by food he does show his hunting instincts but i cant get his eye contact i cant get his energy level low enough to do serious training he is an outside dog at the moment but i know he could be an amazing inside/outside and even hunting dog.
He does not take to correction i feel due to him not knowing what it is any suggestions or vidios that may help? I walk him before training but he is still a struggle.
